TEDxSFU captures event enthusiasm with Stream

Everyone has a story to tell. TED talks transform these stories into opportunities to inspire others. If you’ve ever watched a TED talk, you’ll know that after the curtain closes, you’re left thinking, questioning and looking for ways to turn that inspiration into action.

From sexual health to building your own mobile empire, TEDxSFU was about taking these ‘ideas worth spreading’ and making them your own. Using Stream by Tradable Bits, TEDxSFU turned a typically one-way lecture series into an interactive forum about what it means to design your own path with innovation.

"We wanted a beautiful, fast, and live updating display for all the social media happenings on the day of TEDxSFU, and Stream definitely met that need," said Christina Luo, Marketing Communications Lead for TEDxSFU, "it was easy to customize to our own branded feel, and looked very professional."

The hum of discussion that followed each talk was visually represented on the TEDxSFU Stream, as attendees’ responses, questions and photos flooded onto the massive screen.

Instead of fragmenting the conversation into various social networks, TEDxSFU was able to direct attendees (and those unable to attend) to a single, branded page on their website. “It was fantastic that our audience could see it all at once,” said Christina, “instead of asking them to follow our Facebook, Twitter and Instagram feeds.”

Participants quickly recognized the Stream as their way of interacting with the event itself, even to the point where “many photos of our Stream TV display at the event showed up on our social Stream,” laughed Christina, “I take that as positive feedback in an awesome, Inception-esque way!”

Tradable Bits supported the event by attending as a Gold Sponsor, but also by providing day-of technical assistance. ”Things got done faster than we could fathom. Even on the day of the event, I emailed them and they fixed a problem while they were on their way up the mountain!” said Christina.

TEDxSFU organizers didn’t fully realize Stream’s ability to harness, streamline and record the discussion surrounding the event until after it was over. When asked what she would do differently next year, Christina responded that she “would have implemented Stream earlier to gather more data.”
